Abstract
In-silico simulations of neurons are crucial for understanding the complexinteractions and dynamics within neural networks, which underpin cognitivefunctions and behaviors in biological organisms. The Blue Brain Cellular Lab-oratory (BlueCelluLab) is a software package designed for detailed simulationand experimentation on individual and groups of neurons.Key features of BlueCelluLab include the ability to automate in-silico whole-cell patching experiments, offering a method for exploring neuron behavior in acontrolled, virtual setting. The software is effective in facilitating the validationof synaptic properties and investigating post-synaptic potentials.BlueCelluLab supports the SONATA network model, simplifying the engage-ment with SONATA circuit models for specific neuron group simulations. TheSONATA format, jointly defined by the Blue Brain Project (BBP) and the AllenInstitute for Brain Science (AIBS), offers a standardized approach for represent-ing and simulating neural circuits. An invaluable aspect of BlueCelluLab fornetwork simulations is its replay simulation capability. As running full circuitscan consume significant resources, BlueCelluLab offers an efficient method forpost-simulation analysis. Researchers can modify certain properties of targetedcells, like synaptic plasticity attributes, and then rerun the simulation for thesemodified cells while still observing the network’s overall impact. This featureallows observation of how a modified neuron (or a group of neurons) behaveswhen reintegrated into the full circuit.BlueCelluLab is available on GitHub and can be seamlessly integrated intoexisting workflows via installation from Python package repositories.
