About

The Patro lab at the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS) seeks a postdoctoral research associate to develop novel computational methods for high-throughput sequencing genomics and efficient, robust implementations of them. The main focus is single-cell transcriptomic (RNA-seq) and ATAC-seq data, with long-read RNA sequencing and foundational algorithmic and data-structure questions also in scope. The postdoc leads their own project, writes tools in high-performance languages (Rust, C, C++, Zig) integrated with the lab's open-source software, prepares manuscripts and funding proposals, and co-mentors PhD students in a lab committed to open science.

Salary range $75,000-$80,000.

Requirements

PhD in computer science or a closely related field; experience in independent research in algorithmic genomics, in handling large genomics datasets, and in developing software in compiled, statically typed, garbage-collection-free languages; strong communication and interpersonal skills. Preferred: computational methods for genomics, succinct data structures, high-dimensional statistical inference, Rust, data visualisation, genomics tools and workflow systems such as Nextflow or Snakemake. Application: personal statement, CV, research portfolio (2-4 papers or mature preprints), software sample and two references.
