About

Eighteen-month postdoctoral research appointments in ocean sciences and engineering, including chemistry, geology, geophysics, mathematics, meteorology, physics, biology, economics and marine policy. Scholars conduct independent research with WHOI scientific or senior technical staff; the 2027 competition also includes Marine Policy and Ocean Carbon Cycling awards. Annual stipend is at least USD 73,000, with relocation, health and welfare allowances and an independent research budget.

Appointments start between 1 January and 1 October 2027; scholars must reside at WHOI for at least two-thirds of the appointment. Applications are open and close on 15 October 2026. Contacting potential scientific sponsors in advance is strongly recommended.

Requirements

Doctorate by appointment, obtained no more than three years before the start date; command of English and an independent research proposal. MIT-WHOI Joint Program students, certain recent WHOI postdoctoral appointees, those with more than 12 months as WHOI guest students and candidates with a WHOI doctoral co-advisor are excluded. Submit CV, three non-WHOI recommendations, one-page research experience summary and four-page proposed research/career statement. The linked WHOI portal requires an account.
