The 2027 McKnight Neurobiology of Brain Disorders Award supports research connecting fundamental neuroscience to brain injury or disease, including mechanisms relevant to diagnosis, prevention and treatment. Awards provide USD 100,000 annually for three years, beginning July 2027. Indirect costs and PI/co-PI salary each have a separate 10% total-award cap. Applicants must be independent investigators at US nonprofit research institutions with at least three years in tenured or tenure-track faculty roles. All co-PIs must qualify. The winter selection recruits doctoral researchers to investigate cancer mechanisms and improve diagnosis, treatment and prevention. Applications close on 19 October 2026 through the DKFZ online system. Research is interdisciplinary, including experimental and computational approaches. Programme positions awarded through the selection are funded by a DKFZ PhD employment contract for at least three years, approximately equivalent to 65% TVöD E13, with social-security contributions and no tuition fees. UKRI invites interdisciplinary teams to investigate gambling-related harm and develop evidence for prevention and treatment. The call spans research-council disciplines and expects participation from people with lived or learned experience of gambling harms. Projects may run for up to three years, with full economic costs up to £2 million; UKRI normally covers 80% of those costs. This project-cost ceiling is distinct from the funder contribution. The programme has an £18 million budget. Applications opened on 21 September 2026 and close at 16:00 UK time on 8 December 2026.

This presentation will include a brief resume of research in older populations led from Cambridge that have informed current clinical understanding and policy regarding services and prevention for and of dementia. These population studies have more recently been ‘re-purposed’ with enthusiasm from participants into a trial platform, and this also has enabled ongoing follow-up by telephone during the COVID pandemic. Although there are no formal outputs from these latter developments general impressions will be shared.
