Develop an original research project during a residential fellowship in Stellenbosch, South Africa, in the first semester of 2028. All disciplines are eligible. STIAS prioritises interdisciplinary exchange and conceptual or analytical work; it does not provide laboratories or fund fieldwork during residence. Seed support for short pilot and feasibility studies connected to the Tropical Field Station La Gamba in Costa Rica. Projects may cover scoping, method development, baseline data collection or initial infrastructure, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary research and follow-on external proposals within 6–12 months. Desk-based and preparatory research are permitted; an on-site visit is not mandatory. Base awards are up to EUR 10,000 for single-discipline projects or EUR 20,000 for interdisciplinary projects, over at most 15 months. A separate EUR 5,000 bonus follows submission of a competitive external funding application. The second call closes on 31 October 2026.

A ten-week research stay at KNIR in Rome for affiliated postdoctoral researchers who can demonstrate that access to Rome benefits their research. KNIR’s interdisciplinary profile includes material culture, archaeological evidence, archives and Rome’s connections with the wider world. The scholarship provides free lodging, an academic supervisor and library access; travel and other expenses must be supported by the researcher’s home institution or project. This call supports five consecutive months of research mobility between current SASUF+ partner universities in Sweden and South Africa. Researchers remain attached to their home institution while joining a host research group. Applications close on 4 November 2026; placements must finish by 1 June 2028. Submit a host invitation, home-institution approval, application form, CV/publications and motivation statement. The award supports additional mobility costs; Swedish applicants retain their home salary or other support.
This Swedish nomination call supports cooperative research with a Japanese host for 1–12 months. Fellowships start between 1 July 2027 and 31 March 2028. Applicants submit to JSPS Stockholm for nomination by STINT and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. The call closes on 30 November 2026.

Enable excellent unfunded ERC Starting Grant 2026 projects to proceed at Austrian research institutions. The programme uses the ERC evaluation and supports a research project adapted to its own funding and duration limits. It accepts projects from all disciplines and requires the original proposal, ERC decision and evaluation reports, plus any explanation of cost reductions.
